Newtown Linford CC

29th June 2013...

Newtown Linford CC v Rothley Park CC
Leicestershire County Cricket League Division 1
Main Street, Newtown Linford, Leicestershire

Newtown Linford Cricket Club is located on Main Street at the junction with Groby Lane in the middle of the village. I suppose it could be stereotyped as a typical English village cricket ground with various quirks giving it a uniqueness. These being very little space around part of the boundary, a pronounced slope and cars driving on the outfield to park up. The village itself gets very busy with it being the main entrance for Bradgate Park, which for anyone unaware is a Medieval Deer Park covering an area of 850 acres or 3 square kilometres.

The game saw Rothley restrict their hosts to 175-6 off their allocated forty five overs, with left hander Darren Bulpitt scoring an impressive 69 not out. This was a target that I felt Rothley should reach with relative ease, and this proved to be the case as they needed just thirty seven overs to do so. BBC Radio Leicester presenter Charles Dagnall top scored for the visitors with forty nine.

Rothley Park CC

Saturday 8th June 2013
Westfield Lane, Rothley, Leicestershire

With the forecast being good I decided to have another go at photographing the game of cricket. It was then a case of deciding where to go, and I narrowed it down to two - Cropston CC and Rothley Park CC. After having had the all clear from Rothley via the clubs twitter feed (@RothleyParkCC) that it would be ok to take photos, and also knowing where their ground is I made the twenty minute drive. This would be only the second ever time that I would be watching the sport live, and the first time that I would have seen a game in the Leicestershire County Cricket League.

Rothley Park play their home games on Westfield Lane on the western side of the village, with the entrance being down a track just before the Wellsic Lane turning. It opens up and the car park is to the left, the pitch in front and the pavilion to the right. The pitch is a three level affair, with it sloping up from south to north with the square set on flat ground in the middle.

At the start of play both these teams occupied the bottom two places in the division so I expected it to be a close game. The matches are played over 45 overs, but with not being familiar with the rules regarding the awarding of points etc I can't go into any detail as such. Shepshed batted first and posted 241/7 from their allocated overs and Dean Scaysbrook was their top scorer with 82. Rothley started slowly in reply and after 22 overs were 80/2. This was when I had to leave as I was going out for a drink that evening, and unfortunately did not see the conclusion of this game. In my mind as I was leaving it would be Shepshed that would go on to record the victory, but while at the Castle in Kirby Muxloe I checked my phone for the result. To my surprise, and there is no disrespect meant here, Rothley had recorded the victory with one over to spare with a score of 245 for the loss of six wickets. Rich Mear top scored with an unbeaten 79. Regarding the points situation Rothley were awarded 22 with Shepshed 10.

The forecasted sunshine never materialised and I found it hard to get any decent photographs. I uploaded the better ones to my flickr album and they can be viewed in the slideshow below:
